Giant Liquid Argon Observatory for Proton Decay, Neutrino Astrophysics and CP-violation in the Lepton Sector (GLACIER)
GLACIER (Giant Liquid Argon Charge Imaging ExpeRiment) is a large underground
observatory for proton decay search, neutrino astrophysics and CP-violation
studies in the lepton sector. Possible underground sites are studied within the
FP7 LAGUNA project (Europe) and along the JPARC neutrino beam in collaboration
with KEK (Japan). The concept is scalable to very large masses.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, Contribution to the Workshop "European Strategy

Comparison of analyses of the QTLMAS XIV common dataset. II: QTL analysis
Background - A quantitative and a binary trait for the 14th QTLMAS 2010 workshop were simulated under a model which combined additive inheritance, epistasis and imprinting. This paper aimed to compare results submitted by the participants of the workshop. Methods - The results were compared according to three criteria: the success rate (ratio of mapped QTL to the total number of simulated QTL), and the error rate (ratio of false positives to the number of reported positions), and mean distance between a true mapped QTL and the nearest submitted position. Results - Seven groups submitted results for the quantitative trait and five for the binary trait. Among the 37 simulated QTL 17 remained undetected. Success rate ranged from 0.05 to 0.43, error rate was between 0.00 and 0.92, and the mean distance ranged from 0.26 to 0.77 Mb. Conclusions - Our comparison shows that differences among methods used by the participants increases with the complexity of genetic architecture. It was particularly visible for the quantitative trait which was determined partly by non-additive QTL. Furthermore, an imprinted QTL with a large effect may remain undetected if the applied model tests only for Mendelian genes
Methods for the study of ionic currents and Ca(2+)-signals in isolated colonic crypts
Isolated epithelial cells from intestinal mucosae are a suitable object for the study of the regulation of ion transport in the gut. This regulation possesses a great importance for human and veterinary medicine, as diarrheal diseases, which often are caused by an inadequate activation of intestinal anion secretion, are one of the major lethal diseases of children or young animals. The aim of this paper is to describe a method for the isolation of intact colonic crypts, e.g. for the subsequent investigation of the regulation of anion secretion by the intracellular second messenger, Ca(2+) using electrophysiological and imaging techniques
High p_T Spectra of Identified Particles Produced in Pb+Pb Collisions at 158GeV/nucleon Beam Energy
Transverse momentum spectra of pi^{+/-}, p, pbar, K^{+/-}, K^0_s and Lambda
at midrapidity were measured at high p_T in Pb+Pb collisions at 158GeV/nucleon
beam energy by the NA49 experiment. Particle yield ratios (p/pi, K/pi and
Lambda/K^0_s) show an enhancement of the baryon/meson ratio for p_T>2GeV/c. The
nuclear modification factor R_{CP} is extracted and compared to RHIC
measurements and pQCD calculations.Comment: Quark Matter 2005 parallel section proceeding
NA49 results on hadron production: indications of the onset of deconfinement ?
The NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS measured the energy and system size
dependence of particle production in A+A collisions. A change of the energy
dependence of several hadron production properties at low SPS energies is
observed which suggests a scenario requiring the onset of deconfinement.Comment: XXXV International Symposium on Multiparticle Dynamics 200
High p_T Spectra of Identified Particles Produced in Pb+Pb Collisions at 158A GeV Beam Energy
Results of the NA49 collaboration on the production of hadrons with large
transverse momentum in Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV beam energy are presented.
A range up to p_T = 4 GeV/c is covered. The nuclear modification factor R_CP is
extracted for pions, kaons and protons, and the baryon to meson ratios p/pi+,
pbar/pi- and Lambda/K^0_s are studied. All results are compared to other
measurements at SPS and RHIC and to theoretical calculations.Comment: Submitted to J. Phys. G (Proceedings of the 9th International

Strangeness production at SPS energies
We present a summary of measurements of strange particles performed by the
experiment NA49 in central and minimum bias Pb+Pb collisions in the beam energy
range 20A - 158A GeV. New results on Xi production in central Pb+Pb collisions
and on Lambda, Xi production in minimum bias collisions are shown. Transverse
mass spectra and rapidity distributions of strange particles at different
energies are compared. The energy dependence of the particle yields and ratios
is discussed. NA49 measurements of the Lambda and Xi enhancement factors are
shown for the first time.Comment: Submitted to J. Phys. G (Proceedings of the 9th International

Rapidity and energy dependence of the electric charge correlations in A+A collisions at the SPS energies
Results from electric charge correlations studied with the Balance Function
method in A+A collisions from 20\emph{A} to 158\emph{A} GeV are presented in
two different rapidity intervals: In the mid-rapidity region we observe a
decrease of the width of the Balance Function distribution with increasing
centrality of the collision, whereas this effect vanishes in the forward
rapidity region.
Results from the energy dependence study in central Pb+Pb collisions show
that the narrowing of the Balance Function expressed by the normalised width
parameter \textit{W} increases with energy towards the highest SPS and RHIC
energies.
Finally we compare our experimental data points with predictions of several
models. The hadronic string models UrQMD and HIJING do not reproduce the
observed narrowing of the Balance Function. However, AMPT which contains a
quark-parton transport phase before hadronization can reproduce the narrowing
of the BF's width with centrality. This confirms the proposed sensitivity of
the Balance Function analysis to the time of hadronization.Comment: Submitted in Phys. Rev.
